This journal written by John Henry McCrackan's mother, Anna, records their activities from his birth on April 15, 1856 in New York, until his marriage to Cora Gertrude Bailey in 1885 and the birth of their daughter, Gertrude, in 1886. During John's childhood and adolescence the McCrackans traveled frequently within the United States and spent extended periods of time each year in Europe, especially in England, Germany and Switzerland. A significant portion of the journal was written in March 1884.

John McCrackan was born in New Haven, Connecticut ca. 1821-1823. He may have been educated in Rochester, New York. McCrackan arrived in San Francisco aboard the ship "Balance" on November 24, 1849. Settling in that city, he practiced law, owned property (including the "Balance"), and was active in local Whig, then Independent politics. McCrackan was born in New York City on April 15, 1856 and was the son of John McCrackan, a lawyer, and Anna Pamela Sanford. Much of his early education was received in Europe. He graduated from Trinity College, Hartford, Conn. in 1882 and studied for the Episcopal priesthood at Berkeley Divinity School, New Haven, Conn., graduating in 1885.
